At Zhejiang University, two international students—TUNGAMIRAI ERIC MUPONA from Zimbabwe and ABUBAKER ELSIDDIG AHMED ELMUSTAFA ELSHEIKH HAYATY from Sudan—are discovering that their academic journeys are connected to something far greater than themselves. Their studies in China not only bring them closer to the language and culture but also open up unexpected dialogues.
Eric: a second Letter, and a renewed mission
For Eric, the reply carried a special meaning. This was the second time he had received a response from President XI.Since the first letter, he has been inspired to deepen cultural exchange between China and Africa, and continues to share their stories with the world. He has participated in forums, created content that shares African stories with Chinese audiences, and encouraged discussions about cooperation and mutual understanding.

President XI’s second letter reaffirmed his direction. The message, which called on young sinologists to present a true, multidimensional picture of China, reminded Eric why he started this journey in the first place: to help people see one another more clearly.
Abubaker: a new chapter in cross-cultural dialogue
For Abubaker, the reply marked an important milestone in his own academic story. Having devoted himself to studying China’s development and cultural landscape, he saw the letter as recognition of the role international scholars can play in the global conversation about China.

President XI’s words encouraged him to continue building connections—whether through research, intercultural activities on campus, or dialogues with students from China and around the world. Abubaker hopes to bring what he learns in China back to Sudan, helping deepen understanding between the two nations.
One vision, many voices
In his response, President XI urged young sinologists to serve as bridges between civilizations, sharing authentic and multifaceted stories of China with the world. For Eric and Abubaker, their experiences—forged across two continents and cultures, and now illuminated by this letter—epitomize a growing network of international students who view China not merely as a place of learning, but as a platform for global collaboration.
Though their paths differ, their goals converge: to foster cross-border communication, understanding, and mutual appreciation. As preparations for the World Chinese Language Conference proceed, Eric and Abubaker exemplify how cultural curiosity, academic commitment, and open dialogue can draw the world closer—one letter, one story, and one student at a time.
