[Messages from the editor: Scientists hold the belief for a long time that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point does not exist. However, Professor YUAN Huiqiu, executive deputy director of the Center for Correlated Matter (CCM), has been taking an opposite position. SHEN Bin and ZHANG Yongjun, PhD candidates in YUAN’s group, recently shared a Nature paper- “Strange metal behavior in a pure ferromagnetic Kondo lattice” with co-first authorship. They shared with Global Commun...

A study led by Prof. YUAN Huiqiu at the Center for Correlated Matter and Department of Physics reported the discovery of a quantum critical point and strange metal behavior in the ferromagnet CeRh6Ge4. Their findings overturn the prevailing belief that ferromagnetic quantum critical points do not exist in nature, and establish the existence of an enigmatic “strange metal” phase in a new setting, that of ferromagnetic materials. Related article was published on 5th March 2020, Nature....

Today is International Women’s Day, a global day to honor women’s rights and achievements across the political, economic, social and cultural spheres. Women in ZJU community stay in the frontline of education, research and innovation and many of them are heroes in harm’s way. ZJU is very proud of these empowering women. There is no better time to shine a light on what they have been doing. Their achievements have been acknowledged by the MoST of China, MIT TR35 China, Ho Leu...

ZJUers are constantly pondering the two questions raised by Prof. CHU Kochen: “ What is your original aspiration on enrollment? Where do you want to go in life?”From 1936 to 1949, Prof. CHU Kochen served as the president of National Chekiang University (now known as Zhejiang University) and elevated our institution to one of the most prestigious universities in China. He encourages younger generation to look inward, reflect upon themselves and set a goal in life.Today, on his 130th&nb...

Epilepsy is one of the most pervasive neurological disorders, affecting 7.0‰ of the population in China. It is considered to be a circuit-level syndrome pathologically characterized by excessive or hypersynchronous discharges with enhanced neuronal excitability due to excitatory–inhibitory imbalance. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is particularly challenging from a therapeutic perspective because of frequent resistance to anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). Moreover, surgical resection of epileptic...

[Messages from the editor: Urbanization of migrant workers in China has been discussed extensively. These workers take up the largest proportion of passengers during the holiday. During the outbreak of COVID-19, those who returned to their hometowns before the Spring Festival and those who will return to work may well become the victims of the epidemic.Recently Prof. ZHANG accepted interview by www.thepaper.cn and CGTN GlobalBusiness. She shared some insights on this issue and the meas...

At the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium 2020, the research team comprised of scientists from Zhejiang University, McGill University and the University of Toronto delivered an unsettling message to the general public. In their paper, they claimed that they discovered a new way of attack on a smartphone. Specifically speaking, an app in a smartphone can employ its built-in accelerometer to eavesdrop on the speaker by recognizing the speech emitted by the speaker and reco...
