Nature names ZJU 20th globally for prolific research output

2019-11-06

Zhejiang University ranked No. 20 in the world out of 500 academic institutions and 6th among Chinese universities for publication of scientific research, according to the latest report from the Nature Index.

The ranking is based on research results published in 82 high-quality scientific journals. The rate of our inclusion in those prestigious journals in chemistry, life sciences, physical sciences and earth and environmental sciences is taken into account and co-authorship is adjusted fractionally by the index.

Groundbreaking research from ZJU published in prestigious journals include a paper from Institute of Crop Science where researchers teamed up with scientists from the University of Glasgow and depicted a novel approach to allow plants to produce more biomass. The stomatal kinetics of engineered plants is enhanced to improve water use efficiency without penalty in carbon fixation.

Additional notable papers include one from School of Medicine, that designs a bio-glue to patch “cuts” in heart surgery. This UV-activated exceedingly adhesive hemostatic biomimetic hydrogel stops high-pressure bleeding of beating heart in 20s without suture.

And, a study by WANG Haohua and co-workers at Zhejiang University, the CAS Institute of Physics, the CAS Institute of Automation and Beijing Computational Science Research Center, have experimentally demonstrated quantum entanglement with 20 qubits on a superconducting circuit.

ZJU’s culture of openness and innovation allows our outstanding faculty and scholars to conduct high volumes of transformative research, which has a global impact. Backed by university-wide open innovation ecosystem and Global Strategy of ZJU, fresh ideas are translated into knowledge and solutions to benefit society—from the mystery about exceptional properties of high entropy alloys and synthesis of inorganic materials for 3D printing, to atomic structure of ion cotransporters, key processes of bacterial sensing and molecular mechanism behind anxiety. These scientific discoveries published in Cell, Science and Nature are only the most recent to highlight the ZJU’s commitment to research and innovation.
