Recently, the sparse orthogonal factor regression (SOFAR) framework, based on the sparse singular value decomposition (SVD) within the coefficient matrix, was introduced for interpretable multi-task learning, enabling the discovery of meaningful latent feature-response association networks across different layers. However, conducting precise inference on the latent factor matrices has remained challenging due to the orthogonality constraints inherited from the sparse SVD constraints. In this paper, we suggest a novel approach called the high-dimensional manifold-based SOFAR inference (SOFARI), drawing on the Neyman near-orthogonality inference while incorporating the Stiefel manifold structure imposed by the SVD constraints. By leveraging the underlying Stiefel manifold structure that is crucial to enabling inference, SOFARI provides easy-to-use bias-corrected estimators for both latent left factor vectors and singular values, for which we show to enjoy the asymptotic mean-zero normal distributions with estimable variances. We illustrate the effectiveness of SOFARI and justify our theoretical results through simulation examples and a real data application in economic forecasting.

Speaker: Professor Mohammed AbouzaidVenue: Hainayuan Building 2, room 210Abstract: Morse formulated his main results, relating topology to the calculus of variants almost exactly a century ago. This lecture will begin by re-casting Morse's results in modern terms, using the formalism that Witten developed in the 1980's, in terms of the existence of a chain complex, built from the critical points of a function and the gradient flow lines connecting them, and whose homology computes ordinary homology. l will then describe modern developments, initiated by Floer, for describing more delicate information about a manifold, using gradient flow trajectories, than are encoded in ordinary homology. Finally, l will address some of the motivations for the recent progress, arising in the areas of symplectic topology and Hamiltonian dynamics.
Mohammed Abouzaid joined our department in 2023 as a Professor of Mathematics. He is currently teaching Topics in Symplectic Geometry.
Mohammed completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 2007. His primary research interest is in structures arising from studying Floer theory on Symplectic manifolds, as well as their applications.
Mohammed has received awards such as the Invited ICM Lecture (2014) and New Horizons Prize (2017)

Speaker: Professor Jiang-Hua Lu(The University of Hong Kong)Venue: 数学科学学院2楼报告厅(海纳苑2幢210室)Abstract: After briefly introducing some basic facts in Poisson geometry, we explain how Poisson geometric considerations naturally lead to cluster mutations as in the theory of cluster algebras. As a special class of examples, we show how the so-called standard Poisson structure on generalized Schubert cells can be used, via the theory of symmetric Poisson CGL extensions developed by K. Goodearl and M. Yakimov, to obtain cluster structures on related varieties from Lie theory.
