Speaker: Prof. Shan Peng (Tsinghua University)Venue: Lecture Hall of Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, East Building 7, Zijingang CampusAbstract: We will explain a bijection between admissible representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras and fixed points in affine Springer fibers. We will also explain how to match the modular group action on the characters with the one defined by Cherednik in terms of double affine Hecke algebras, and extensions of these relations to representations of W-algebras. This is based on joint work with Dan Xie and Wenbin Yan.
Shan Peng is a professor of Tsinghua University, focusing on geometric representation theory.

Speaker: Dr.Hong HaoVenue: ZOOM (Scan the QR Code to register)Abstract: The design philosophy and methodology of civil engineering structures have been constantly evolving, from the early strength-based to more recent performance-based design and the current intensively researched emerging resilience-based design. Because failure of civil engineering structures often leads to catastrophic consequences, the primary focus of all these design methods is the safety of structures while considering other aspects such as performance and resilience. With the economic growth, population increase and urbanization, as well as global warming and the depletion of natural resources, to meet the societal need for sustainable development, the construction of civil engineering structures also needs to consider sustainability, durability and smart lifecycle management besides safety, performance and resilience. This talk discusses the necessity, challenge and opportunity for the development of the next generation design of sustainable, durable, multi-hazard resistant, resilient and smart civil engineering structures, i.e., ‘SDuMuRS’. Critical reviews and discussions on each of these aspects are presented. Research directions are suggested accordingly for achieving these goals for the design of next generation civil engineering structures.
Hong Hao is a professor in Earthquake Engineering Research and Test Center in Guangzhou University, China and a John Curtin Distinguished professor in Curtin University, Australia and an Australian Laureate Fellow. Speaker: Professor CHEN YiAvenue: Conference Room 618, School of Economics Abstract: On the eve of its economic reforms, China achieved a much higher level of secondary education than other countries with a similar per capita income at the time, This study investigates the pre-reform formation of China's human capital by examining a massive rural education expansion program during the Cultural Revolution that increased the number of secondary schools more than tenfold. We estimate the impact of the expansion by compiling a new county-level data from local gazetteers and exploiting the county-level variation in the speed of expansion for the identification purpose. We provide strong evidence that the program significantly improved rural children's educational attainment and suggestive evidence that teachers contributed more to this improvement than schools. By building a pool of middle-skilled labor years later, the education expansion program boosted local agricultural yields and increased the productivity of the township and village enterprises that emerged after the reform, There is some evidence that this rapid expansion was associated with a deterioration in education quality.

Speaker: Professor Zide DU Venue: Reading Room, RC No.1Abstract: The university is a place for professional learning. However, a university diploma may not give you an edge at workplace. After all, a good master of professional knowledge is not enough, and you need to learn how to interact with others, namely Intelligence Quotient. Leadership is also necessary. Come and talk with Professor DU about the Professional Cultivation and Competitiveness.
Professor Zide DU, a Principal Consultant and the Dean of Daoyang Residential College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is also the chairman of National Olympiad in Informatics. DU engaged in computer research and development and worked as a researcher at Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Later he has been the secretary-general at China Computer Federation (CCF) for 17 years.

Speaker:Huiming REN, Shandong UniversityVenue: 311, Building 4, Chengjun YuanAbstract: I first argue that one does not therefore know by closure that φV~e, where φ is a logical consequence of p, if one comes to know that p on the basis of e. As a consequence, it is not wrong for Nozick to deny that if I know that I have hands, then I know that I am not a BIV, even though he and Dretske fail to provide an independent reason for doing so. I then argue that in the famous red-barn thought experiment, my belief that the object is a red barn is not sensitive and therefore, Nozick does not have to deny that if I know that the object is a red barn, then I know that it is a barn. At the end, I argue that safety is not preferable over sensitivity in so far as avoiding skepticism is concerned.
