Venue: Room 201, No. 12 Teaching Building, Yuquan CampusSpeaker: Dr. ZHANG Baile is an Associate Professor in the Division of Physics and Applied Physics, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his Ph.D. in 2009 from MIT, following his B.S. degree in 2003 and M. S. degree in 2006 from Tsinghua University in Beijing, all majored in Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include electromagnetic and acoustic wave theory, metamaterials, and photonic/phononic crystals. He is a recipient of MIT Technology Review TR35 Global Young Innovators Award of 2012. In 2014, he was awarded the Young Scientist Award of Singapore National Academy of Science in Istana. In 2016, he received IPS World Scientific (Physics Research) Medal and Prize.Abstract:Sound waves travelling through air are essentially longitudinal waves that carry neither spin nor charge, and thus do not respond to magnetic fields. However, by constructing gauge fields with different approaches, it is possible to explore magnetic-like effects for sound, such as the quantum Hall effect, and construct various acoustic topological phases. In this talk, I will briefly introduce the field of topological acoustics and some of our recent works.

Venue: Room 250, Mong Mai Wai Building, Zijingang CampusSpeaker: Joel S. Migdal is the Robert F. Philip Professor of International Studies in the University of Washington's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.Abstract:At the heart of state capacity—the ability to see policies through to fruition, to being implemented faithfully—is the question of how authority is established. When and how do states succeed in shaping people’s behaviour, in prompting citizens to obey the state’s rules? Rulemaking is a complicated undertaking, involving numerous parties, coming with different agendas. Implementation of the rules, or laws, is even more complicated, given the diverse stakeholders, each seeking to establish authority. These stakeholders clash, cooperate, and compromise as they hammer out the definitive guidelines about how others should act.

Venue: Room 200-9, Run Run Shaw Business Administration BuildingSpeaker: Dr. Bangti Jin received Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008. Previously, he was an assistant Professor of mathematics at University of California, Riverside (2013-2014), a visiting assistant professor at Texas A&M University (2010-2013), an Alexandre von Humboldt Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bremen (2009-2010). He is currently a Reader in inverse problems in the Department of Computer Science, University College London, London, U.K. His research interests include computational inverse problems and numerical analysis of differential equations.Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography is a noninvasive medical imaging modality, which aims at recovering the conductivity from the boundary electrode voltage measurements. Most reconstruction techniques employ Tikhonov regularization with different penalties, and then discretize the optimization by means of finite element methods. In this talk, I will describe finite element approximations on both uniform and adaptive meshes, and discuss their convergence properties. I will illustrate the discussions with numerical experiments.
