On November 12, the “Science for Future Society” workshop, one of the events in the 2019 General Meeting for the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS), was held on Zijingang Campus at Zhejiang University.

Keynote speakers include Mohamed Hassan (President of TWAS), HUAI Jinpeng (Fellow of CAS and Executive Vice President of China Association for Science and Technology), WU Zhaohui (Fellow of CAS and President of ZJU), RomainMurenzi (Executive Director of TWAS) and WANG Jian (Founder of Alibaba Cloud and Chief Architect of the Hangzhou City Brain project). YANG Wei, Treasurer of TWAS and former President of ZJU, delivered a welcome speech and presided over the workshop.
Mohamed Hassan introduced the changes of global science from two perspectives: the challenges to global sustainable development and the landscape of global science. Romain Murenzi reviewed the efforts of TWAS to advance science for sustainable development goals.
HUAI Jinpengshared his idea on “Science, Science Literacy and Scientific Community”. He talked about the current opportunities and challenges in science, and proposed the initiative of “making concerted efforts to promote science literacy and create a bright future”.
WU Zhaohui delivered a speech on “Cyborg Intelligence: Towards the Fusion of Machine Intelligence and Biological Intelligence”. “Our project aims to advance research in brain science and machine intelligence and drive the development of new tools and technologies to benefit the society”, said WU Zhaohui.
“In the future, data will work like water as a new resource, computing will work like electricity as an alternative energyand the City Brain will work like the electrical grid as a novel type of infrastructure,” said WANG Jian in his speech on “City Brain and Its Significance”.
