On May 12, Hong Lei, Deputy Director General of the Information Department and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered an address with regard to Xi Jinping’s important speeches and the current international situation. The address was a vital component of ZJU’s publicity campaign about the G20 Hangzhou summit. Zhang Hongjian, Vice President of ZJU, presided over the address.

Hong Lei has long been serving as a diplomat and is well-equipped with rich diplomatic experience. In his address, he elaborated on the core of Xi Jinping’s major opinions on diplomatic work, conducted an insightful evaluation of opportunities and challenges in a wide spectrum of diplomatic ties, presented a systematic overview of experience and measures in China’s great-power diplomacy, and made an in-depth analysis of such hot issues as China-US relations, the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative and tensions on the Korean Peninsula. He pointed out that diplomacy is an integral part of the realization of the great revival of the Chinese nation. “The biggest opportunity in diplomacy is China’s own development,” Hong Lei said.

When it comes to the G20 Hangzhou summit, Hong Lei said that it will stress innovation, reform and development. “Hangzhou will be a launch pad for the G20 summit and China will be a launch pad for the world economy,” he said.

During the Q&A session, Hong Lei communicated with participants in different topics, such as cooperation with and assistance to African countries and what G20 will bring to China.
