The 14th China Model United Nations (CNMUN) Conference was held at Zhejiang University on October 27-29. The conference was valued as a highlight event on campus as it took place during the 10th anniversary of ZJUMUN, an influential student society at the University.

Around 600 students and instructors from 205 universities and colleges in China converged at ZJU for the conference. Fourteen senior diplomats, including former Chinese ambassador to Canada Mr. LU Shumin, were also invited to offer their insights into diplomacy and various global issues.

The conference featured hot-spot issues about the human condition, such as sustainable development, climate change, gender equality, network freedom and security, and the protection of human rights.

“Discussions with the other delegates have inspired me on what it means by being ‘a representative of a country’ and what it takes to defend ‘the interest of a country’”, said TAN Ziyu, a ZJU freshmen who participated in the conference.

TAN said he had thoroughly enjoyed the conference, especially the fierce debates between delegates, from which he had learnt to respond quickly to new points being proposed.

The CNMUN conference has been held annually in different universities since 2004 and regarded as the highest level and the most influential model United Nations conference in China. It aims to promote the spirit of the United Nations and enhance students’ global vision and critical thinking skills through the collision of minds.

Founded in November 2007 by ZJU’s School of International Studies and a joint host of this year’s conference, ZJUMUN is certified by CNMUN as a MUN leader in eastern China. With around 50 core members, ZJUMUN has been awarded several honors including ZJU Four-star Society and Excellent Society of Zhejiang Province.
