UN official shares professional experience with students

A senior official from the United Nations visited Zhejiang University on April 2 to share his professional experience with students.

Dr. Yong Ho, a Chinese Language Supervisor of the UN Chinese Program, was on ZJU’s Xixi Campus to give a lecture titled “Approach to the United Nations”. The talk is part of the Lecture Series on Talent Training for International Organizations organized by ZJU’s College of Education.

Drawing upon his working experience, Dr. Ho introduced the UN’s general mission, major organizations, and operating mechanism, etc. He also detailed the distinctions among the UN, UN funds, programs, and exclusive agencies and explained the UN personnel system.

At the Q&A session, Dr. Ho shared his insights while answering questions concerning “the critical qualities of international talent training”, “how to get access to the UN internship” and so forth. Vivid and comprehensive, his introduction greatly deepened the students’ understanding of the UN and inspired them to make their way towards more international organizations.

Presided by College of Education Vice Dean Prof. KAN Yue, the lecture attracted more than 80 faculty members and students from different colleges and departments.

“The Lecture Series on Talent Training for International Organizations” aim to develop students’ global perspectives and prepare them for working in international organizations. Dr. Ho’s lecture is the inaugural event of the lecture series, with still more to come in the following days.

Dr. Yong Ho was born and grew up in Nanjing, China. He taught English at a university in China before studying study at Columbia University to pursue a doctoral degree. He received his Ph.D. in anthropology/ linguistics in 1992. His publications include Aspects of Discourse Structure in Mandarin Chinese (1994), Beginner's Chinese (1997, 1999, 2001), China: An Illustrated History (2000), A Children's Dictionary of Chinese (2000), A Chinese-English Dictionary of 500 Most Frequently Used Words in Chinese (2001), and Intermediate Chinese.
