Co-organized by ZJU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering and Zhejiang Materials Research Society, the 3rd International Conference on Microstructure and Property of Materials (ICMPM) was held in Hangzhou during May 25-29.
Highlighting the importance of science and technology, prof. ZHANG Ze, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chair of Academic Committee of ZJU, delivered an opening address on May 27. Research, education and industry related to materials science will be a major driving force for scientific and technological revolution in the new era, according to ZHANG.

In his keynote speech entitled “Damage-tolerance in engineering and biological materials”, prof. Robert O. Ritchie, member of both American National Academy of Engineering and British Royal Academy of Engineering, shared views on developing toughness in a range of biological and natural materials.

Prof. Gustaaf Van Tendeloo, member of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium, also an expert in the field of electron microscopy, introduced recent discoveries in nano-scale electron tomography and “3D imaging of nano materials down to atomic scale”.

Prof. Shuit-Tong Lee, dean of the Institute of Functional Nano & Soft Materials at Soochow University, gave a keynote speech on the prospect and challenges faced by OLED technology, especially those relevant to the Chinese context.

Prof. Long-Qing Chen of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering and Materials Research Institute of Penn State University showcased his phase-field method to help interpret experimental observations as well as achieve desirable mesoscale microstructures and properties in functional and IT materials.

ICMPM was initiated by the School of Materials Science and Engineering in 2015, aiming to provide a platform for scholars to present advanced research discoveries and for researchers, educators, students and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas in the field of materials science. This year, more than 600 specialists, students and entrepreneurs from 120 celebrated universities, institutes and companies registered for the conference.
Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of ZJU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, around 1000 alumni came back to the School from all over the world and joined the event.
