From July 3 to July 13, the 12th World Choir Games (WCG2023) took place in the captivating city of Gangneung, South Korea. In this attention-grabbing choral event, the Wenqin Chorus of Zhejiang University shone brightly with their stellar performance amid fierce competition. Their extraordinary talent led them to win two gold medals in two categories, namely C5 University and College Choirs and C27 Folklore with Accompaniment.

On July 10, during the Championships Competition in the C5 category, Wenqin Chorus delivered an awe-inspiring showcase of four diverse pieces: “The Sky-like Alashan,” “Hentakan Jiwa,” “Fishermen’s Song at Dusk,” and “Unclouded Day.” From the vast desert landscapes to the misty rivers of the south, from the enchanting corners of China to the vibrant world, Wenqin Chorus’s skilled and heartfelt performance garnered the admiration of both the judges and the audience. As a testament to their brilliance, they secured a gold medal, proudly earning the coveted title of “Champion of the World Choir Games” in this category.

The esteemed title “Champion of the World Choir Games” stands as the highest honor bestowed upon the team that scores the highest point in the Championship Competition. The historic victory marks the first time that Wenqin Chorus has claimed the world championship in this prestigious event. While they have won gold medals in international competitions many times, this triumph signifies an unapparelled milestone and marks a new beginning.

On July 11, in the category of Folklore with Accompaniment, Wenqin Chorus presented three distinctive Chinese folk pieces originating from Dai folk music, Peking Opera, and Taiwanese Shuishe folk music. Their mesmerizing performance earned them the second place in this category.

When asked about their experience participating in World Choir Games, WU Yihan, the student leader, expressed, Being able to stand successfully on the world stage is a result of our passion for choral art. Through this competition, we witnessed the diverse and unique performances of various international teams, which deepened our appreciation for choral art. When our ethnic choral piece received cheers from the audience and recognition from the judges, we felt an overwhelming sense of pride.

Tenor vocalist JIN Wentao echoed similar sentiments. The preparation process was challenging, but the team members persevered with unwavering effort. From rehearsals to travel preparations, and finally to the competition stage, we supported each other, striving to present the repertoire in the best possible way. Our hard work paid off, as we felt immensely moved and proud to represent Zhejiang University and China on the world stage, showcasing our talents, he said.
