The Flute, the Xiao, the Guqin, calligraphy and painting stand as cherished treasures of traditional Chinese culture. Within Zhejiang University, a community of individuals shares a profound passion for promoting this elegant heritage. United in purpose, they collaborate to perpetuate these cultural roots.
This narrative originating from a love for the art itself
Established in 2006, the Zhejiang University Guqin Research Society is an organization formed by kindred spirits. Through mutual exchange and communication, society members share ideas and hone their skills. While not all may possess a firm foundation in the Guqin, a deep affection for the instrument is unanimous. Refined gatherings, concerts, and training sessions empower them to master this seven-stringed instrument and immerse themselves in the emotions it evokes.

The Bamboo Flute Association of ZJU, founded in 2016, boasts a membership exceeding 500 individuals. Bound by curiosity and a shared passion for music, they have grown and developed collectively. For XU Su, an undergraduate student from the class of 2021, the Bamboo Flute Association became the platform through which her curiosity blossomed into a tangible talent. Enchanted by the melodies of the Xiao, XU Su discovered like-minded companions within the association.

Similarly, the Zhejiang University Student Calligraphy and Painting Society brings together a group of like-minded calligraphy and painting enthusiasts. ZOU Chang, a member of the society from the class of 2020, recalls that when she first joined the society, she spent nearly an hour every day studying calligraphy techniques.

Promoting and sharing Chinese traditional culture
The time I enjoy and relax the most during the day is practicing the Guqin in the music room. After years of studying, the Guqin has become an important part of the life of LI Chenrui, a doctoral student from the class of 2022 and a member of the Guqin Research Association. It acts as a pathway for him to delve into the historical and cultural richness of Chinese music, enhancing his understanding of Chinese traditional culture. The music room serves not only as a practice space but also a spiritual retreat”, providing solace during moments of unease or restlessness.
As students embrace an elegant way of life, they also cultivate insights and personal growth. Moreover, they spread the magnificence of Chinese traditional culture through a variety of activities at Zhejiang University.

The Flute culture is a splendid gem of Chinese traditional culture. When talking about the connection between the Flute and traditional culture, HU Bowu, a 2020 undergraduate student, takes pride in the association's endeavors to promote the Flute culture. Like fellow members of the association, he firmly believes that promoting the traditional Chinese instruments enriches and imbues life with meaning. Their fervor for the vast and profound tapestry of Chinese culture fuels their dedication.

CHENG Jia, a 2021 graduate student of the Guqin Research Association, has also done a lot of work to spread the culture of Guqin. Playing the Guqin is my hobby, a source of inner peace. Her aspiration is to introduce the Guqin to more students helping them understand its essence and enabling them to appreciate its beauty through diverse activities.
