On March 19, GU Zhen, Associate Vice President of Zhejiang University, led a delegation on a visit to Macao, China. During the visit, the delegation attended the exhibition “Compilation of Classics in the Flourishing Age: A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings” at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), along with a series of promotion and exchange activities.

At the opening ceremony, LAI Yingjie, Executive Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, TANG Jiale, Vice President of MUST, and GU Zhen delivered speeches. XIAO Long, University Librarian at MUST, shared insights on the cultural value and scholarly significance of A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings with the guests. As part of the event, Zhejiang University presented MUST with its latest published volumes of the collection.

Following the ceremony, the guests toured the exhibition together. Leveraging MUST’s disciplinary strengths, this special exhibition for the first time adopted a thematic framework centered on the integration of art and technology. It explores the technological, medical, and architectural knowledge embedded in ancient Chinese paintings through three sections: “Ingenuity in Craftsmanship,” “Principles of Medicine,” and “Techniques of Construction.” Through the visual lens, the exhibition revisits the achievements of ancient Chinese science and technology, highlighting the enduring practical wisdom and rational inquiry of Chinese civilization.

A features section, “Empowering Contemporary Scientific Research through ‘A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings,’” presents innovative applications of this landmark national cultural project in modern research contexts. By bridging traditional art with contemporary science, the exhibition demonstrates the dynamic potential of interdisciplinary scholarship. The exhibition also serves as one of the major cultural events celebrating the 26th anniversary of MUST, aiming to present the treasures of ancient Chinese art to the Macao community.

At the University of Macau (UM), Rector SONG Yonghua met with GU Zhen and his delegation. SONG Yonghua introduced the UM’s development and strategic vision, with particular emphasis on Hengqin Campus in the Guangdong–Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone. He expressed hope that both sides would build on their strong partnership to further strengthen academic and research exchanges, cultivate innovative talent, and contribute to regional and national development.

GU Zhen introduced Zhejiang University’s latest achievements in talent development, disciplinary innovation, scientific research, and global engagement. He reviewed the progress of collaboration between the two universities in areas such as public administration, economics and finance, medicine, and marine studies. Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of expanding joint training programs, strengthening institutional partnerships, and exploring new models for cross-border collaborative innovation.

The visit underscored the shared commitment of Zhejiang University and its Macao partners to advancing cultural exchange and academic cooperation. By fostering dialogue between tradition and modernity, as well as between disciplines and regions, the collaboration reflects a broader vision of higher education as a driver of innovation, cultural continuity, and global engagement.
