Dining Hall No. 1 on Zhejiang University’s Yuquan Campus reopened in April 2026 after a renovation aimed at improving both dining conditions and the overall campus experience. Long familiar to generations of students and faculty, the hall has returned as a brighter and more welcoming shared space.

The redesign was guided by the concept of combining light, openness, and the everyday warmth of campus dining. The renovation moved beyond the limitations of a more traditional skylight-based layout and created a dining environment that feels more transparent and spacious. Natural light and changing interior shadows help give the hall a more open atmosphere throughout the day.
The project also adjusted the layout and spacing of tables and chairs. These changes are intended to improve circulation and order during busy meal periods while making the space more comfortable for daily use. The updated arrangement is designed not only for efficiency, but also to encourage a more relaxed and approachable setting for interaction among students and faculty.
Beyond serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the renewed dining hall is positioned as a campus gathering place. It can function as a spot for a short break between classes, casual conversations with classmates, or simply a familiar corner of campus where everyday memories are formed.
In this sense, the renovation represents more than an upgrade to a food service facility. It reflects an effort to make a routine part of university life more pleasant, human-centered, and emotionally resonant. The transformation of Dining Hall No. 1 is framed as a shift from simply meeting practical dining needs to creating a space that also offers comfort and a sense of belonging.
