ZJU President MA Yanming meets with British Consul-General in Shanghai Matt Burney

On July 16, Matt Burney, Consul-General of the United Kingdom in Shanghai, led a delegation to visit Zhejiang University. MA Yanming, President of Zhejiang University, met with the delegation on Zijingang Campus, where they exchanged views on advancing China–UK cooperation in higher education.

During the meeting, MA Yanming introduced Zhejiang University’s development and highlighted its long-standing commitment to collaboration with the United Kingdom. He noted that Zhejiang University has established partnerships with more than 10 UK universities and carried out extensive cooperation in areas including talent cultivation, scientific research and cultural exchange. These partnerships have yielded fruitful outcomes in joint education programs. Looking ahead, Zhejiang University will further strengthen practical cooperation with UK universities and research institutions, expand two-way student exchanges, enhance collaborative research and innovation, and contribute to the shared development of higher education in China and the UK.

Matt Burney spoke highly of Zhejiang University’s achievements in education, innovation and global engagement. He emphasized that universities play a vital role in fostering mutual understanding, building trust, and deepening bilateral relations. The British Consulate-General in Shanghai will continue to support Zhejiang University in expanding exchanges and cooperation with the UK, encourage more young people from the UK to visit and study in China, foster closer ties between young people and academic communities of the two countries, and promote dialogue on global development issues of shared interest.

During the visit, the delegation held a discussion with faculty members from the Institute of Global Development at Zhejiang University, where they learned about the Institute’s development and exchanged views on topics including global development, green transition, public policy and knowledge sharing.
