ZJU explores maritime and AI collaboration with Singaporean partners

A delegation from Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) visited Zhejiang University (ZJU) on September 4 to explore new opportunities for collaboration in maritime technology and artificial intelligence.

The delegation included Dr. Chen Xinwei, Deputy Executive Director of SMI, and Lance Lim, Senior Director of the Office of AI & Digital Innovation at SUTD. Wang Lizhong, ZJU Executive Vice President, met with the visitors for discussions on future cooperation.

Wang Lizhong gave an overview of ZJU’s development, academic strengths and current initiatives, highlighting ZJU’s vibrant culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. He expressed ZJU’s interest in working more closely with SMI and SUTD, bringing together the complementary strengths and resources of the three institutions to pursue shared interests and explore new possibilities for collaboration in areas such as marine technology and artificial intelligence.

Chen Xinwei thanked ZJU for the warm welcome and highlighted several areas with strong potential for joint research. He expressed particular interest in collaboration on autonomous ports, smart shipping, maritime decarbonization and port operational efficiency, with the aim of drawing on the research strengths of both sides to develop projects of mutual benefit.

Lance Lim reflected on the longstanding partnership between ZJU and SUTD and looked forward to taking the relationship further. With support from SMI, he said, the two universities could broaden their collaboration and identify new opportunities for joint work in the maritime sector.

The visit opened up new possibilities for closer collaboration among ZJU, SMI and SUTD in maritime technology, artificial intelligence and related fields.
