Key Technologies Research in Contaminated Soil Remediation
Contact: LOU Chenlu, Email: cllou@zju.edu.cn
Research background:

Soil to the Earth is like skin to a man. It is the survival basis and essential wealth to human, which not only supports food production, but also supplys clean groundwater and protect biodiversity. However, in the past 20-30 years, with the rapid development of industrialization and economic growth, natural resources have been exploited. Large quantities of untreated sewage have been directly irrigated. Solid waste was discarded everywhere or simply land-filled. Unreasonable application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides resulted in serious soil pollution and big challenge for food safety and human health in China.

In 2014, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Land and Resources jointly issued the National Soil Pollution Survey Bulletin. The survey shows that the condition of soil environment in China, especially the cultivated land area, isn't optimistic currently. The total pollution points of national soil exceeded 16.1%, cultivated land exceeded the standard rate, which is as high as 19.4%, and the area of medium and heavy polluted arable land increased up to 3.3 million hectares, mainly suffering from the pollution of heavy metals and organic pollutants. It is urgent to implement the economic, efficient and feasible pollution remediation technology.

In order to deal with the problem of soil pollution, Chinese government has already launched “the Action Plan for Soil Pollution Prevention and Control” in 2016. Meanwhile, the government is currently promoting legislation on prevention and control of soil pollution. Under such circumstances, Zhejiang University established a Science and Technology Alliance for Key Technologies Research in Contaminated Soil Remediation to promote soil pollution control and remediation from laboratory to industrialization.

Science and Technology for Novel & High-Performance Materials
Contact: JIN Yizheng, Email: yizhengjin@zju.edu.cn
Research background:

The goal of our alliance is to investigate synthetic control of excited states, physical-chemical properties and applications of colloidal quantum dots (QDs).

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of fluorescent materials with quantum confinement effects. Owning to their outstanding optical properties, such as broad-band absorption, narrow and tunable emission, high photoluminescence quantum yield and high photo-chemical stability, QDs have great potential in the fields of biomedical imaging and photoelectric devices. Their optical and electrical properties can be continuously tuned by size and composition.

Besides, compared with the conjugated organic/polymer light-emitting materials and fluorescent protein, QDs have superior advantages like thermal, optical, and chemical stability, small excited state relaxation energy, long photoluminescence life and high color purity. Compared with the phosphor and other inorganic solid luminescence materials, they have other advantages including superior color purity, flexible synthetic chemistry and solution processability. Therefore, QDs are expected to be understanding materials for light-emitting diode and other applications.

We aim to establish an international leading research alliance in the field of QDs, focusing on the basic scientific problems-the excited states of QDs with scopes on synthesis chemistry, ligand chemistry, spectroscopy and the related applications.

Technologies and Equipment for Chemical Process Intensification
Contact: WANG Jingdai, Email: wangjd@zju.edu.cn
Research background:

Chemical industry is always one of dominant factors that significantly affects the progress of national economy and social development. So far, the output value of chemical industry has accounted for about 16% of GDP in China. Modern chemical products have greatly enriched our material life and improved the quality of life. They also play an important role in controlling the disease, increasing the crop yield and improving technologies of national defense, spaceflights as well as information.

However, high-speed development of modern chemical industry has also resulted in many problems related to the resources and environment worldwide, including the growing scarcity of resources on the earth, high price of oil and apparent degradation of ecological environment. In China, problems related to high energy consumption and waste discharge in chemical industry are severe. The energy consumption of unit output value in our country is 3-8 times of that in developed countries, and the amount of carbon emission ranks the 1st in the world.

Therefore, developing technologies and equipments to improve traditional chemical processes, save energy and reduce emission based on the concept of sustainable development is necessary and urgent at present. Meanwhile, national planning and deployment in the fields of energy (energy conservation), water and mineral resources (high efficiency of mineral resources), environment (pollution control and circular utilization of waste), manufacturing industry (green and automation of process industry, development of raw materials), public security, advanced manufacturing technologies (life prediction of major production facilities), advanced energy technologies (hydrogen energy and fuel cell) and so on not only bring new missions to research on chemical engineering and chemical process equipment, but also give new opportunities to the related research areas.
