Passing on the spirit of baseball: the triumphant history of Zhejiang University Baseball Team

On October 8th, 2023, the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou witnessed the grand finale of its baseball event at the Shaoxing Baseball (Softball) Sports Culture Center. During the thrilling showdown, the South Korean team won the championship, while the Chinese team commendably secured a position among the top four. 

The city of Hangzhou is no stranger to baseball excellence. The Zhejiang University baseball team, known for its remarkable achievements, embodies the spirit of the sport and draws inspiration from global baseball athletes. Long before this international event, they have embarked on a journey to prominence.

Tracing back to the 1950s, the first generation of the Zhejiang University baseball team proudly represented Zhejiang Province at the National Games.

Fast-forwarding to the 21st century, the second-generation team made its mark in the National University Baseball League with unwavering support from the University and guidance from international coaches. The prowess of the youngest generation of the team was recently showcased on June 4, 2023, when they triumphed in the inaugural Zhejiang Provincial University Baseball and Softball Competition, held at Ningbo University of Technology.

This victory is a testament to the team's resilience as well as its unwavering spirit. The euphoria of the victory was along with jubilant cheers, celebrations, and heartfelt emotions. Reflecting on the team's evolution, LIN Weicong, the former captain of the team, shared on WeChat, Every year, we bid farewell to some as they graduate. With stalwarts set to graduate this year, the team is actively seeking dynamic talents to continue their legacy.

The team has once encountered great challenges. Over the decades, they have undergone multiple restructures. However, in December 2021, the baseball team was rejuvenated thanks to the efforts of LIN Weicong.

Today, the Zhejiang University baseball team boasts a diverse roster, featuring talents from countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. Many of these international enthusiasts, passionate about baseball, became members of the team upon their arrival at Zhejiang University. Beyond rigorous training and matches, the team engages in bonding activities, including watching baseball matches and post-match team-building dinners, fostering a deep sense of camaraderie.

With unwavering spirit, the Zhejiang University baseball team is poised to achieve more milestones in the world of baseball. The growing popularity of baseball is evident, not just within academic institutions but also across Hangzhou and China.
