Not every farewell is graced by sunshine, but each parting is imbued with endless blessings. On the morning of June 23, Zhejiang University held the 2024 Summer Graduate Commencement and Degree Conferral Ceremony on Zijingang Campus.

Despite the torrential rain, the passion of youth about the future surged undiminished, warmed by the constant companionship and encouragement of their mentors. More than 6,000 students from Zhejiang University, undeterred by wind and rain, marched toward a bright future with unwavering courage and determination,.

President DU Jiangfeng delivered an inspiring speech titled “Stride Boldly into the Future.” “You are now at an unprecedented historical juncture where the grand blueprint of national rejuvenation intertwines with profound changes in the world, shaping your era together. As you embark on this new journey, uncertainties and unknown challenges abound, yet the core driving force of human civilization remains to be innovation and talent. I urge you to uphold loyalty and responsibility, become pioneers and innovators, and embrace diversity. In the vast world molded by the great changes of the century, may you make great accomplishments, and fully embody the spirit of your era,” said DU. 

LIU Hanlong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a professor at the School of Civil Engineering at Chongqing University, and a member of the Class of 1986, spoke on behalf of alumni. He shared with the graduates the “three cornerstones” that Zhejiang University instilled in him: building the “cornerstone” of life with love for the family and the nation, building the “cornerstone” of work with unity and cooperation, and building the “cornerstone” of development with the spirit of seeking truth and pursuing innovation. He expressed his hope that that the graduates will be committed to their global responsibilities and take truth as their pursuit. By embracing these “three cornerstones”, he encouraged the graduates to embrace these “three cornerstones. “You should enrich their journey, build their dreams, shape their character, create a brilliant chapter of life, and ultimately become trend-setters in leading innovative development,” said LIU.

MA Chiyu, a doctor from the College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Science, spoke on behalf of graduate students. He encapsulated his journey at Zhejiang University with eight Chinese characters — “艰难困苦，玉汝于成”, meaning that “adversity breeds success”. Reflecting on his experience, he remarked, “Every blade of grass, every tree, every word spoken, and every action taken here have collectively shaped the ethos of ‘embracing rivers and seas, promoting truth and virtue, advancing innovation, and serving the nation.’ I am confident that wherever we are, we will make concerted efforts to achieve the noble goal of building a strong nation and achieving national rejuvenation!”

Through turbulent waves may lie ahead, the graduates will navigate the winds and waves and shine brightly after today’s storms and tempests. May you weave your tales in the unfolding world, embracing the duties and missions of the Zhejiang University community.
