Amid the midsummer buzz on the campus of Zhejiang University, twin sisters BAO Jieting and BAO Jieyu remain immersed in their studies and research. Hailing from Haiyan, Zhejiang, the sisters were admitted to Zhejiang University four years ago. Jieting, the elder sister, studies at the College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Science, while her younger sister, Jieyu, is in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering. Both have recently secured postgraduate admissions and are set to continue their academic journey at Zhejiang University.

Supporting each other through challenges
Upon entering university, the sisters initially struggled to adapt to their new environment. However, their companionship helped them overcome feelings of loneliness. Jieting, who maintained a disciplined approach from high school, initially found the university’s learning methods challenging, and her grades reflected that struggle. Refusing to be discouraged, she analyzed her setbacks, adjusted her study techniques, engaged with her professors, and eventually improved her performance.

Jieyu also faced her own hurdles. During a linear algebra exam, she was overwhelmed by the dual pressures of academic work and her responsibilities as class monitor. On the brink of collapse, a heart-to-heart conversation with her homeroom teacher taught her to relax and find more effective study methods, leading her to excel in that exam. This moment marked a significant turning point in her academic journey.
Diving into research and embracing exploration
After settling into university life, the sisters turned their focus toward scientific research. Jieting developed an interest in the field of “brain-computer interface” after being inspired by a promotional video from a professional course. She dedicated long hours in the lab, learning from her seniors and designing her own experiments. Her journey was marked by determination as she balanced her time between classrooms, laboratories, and study rooms.

Jieyu, on the other hand, concentrated on biomedical materials research. Participating in numerous projects, she faced repeated failures but persisted, eventually overcoming experimental challenges. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “Every failure taught me something new. Although it was difficult, it was filled with a sense of accomplishment.”

Beyond academics: a passion for art and life
Beyond their academic pursuits, the sisters also find joy in artistic hobbies. Jieting, an avid painter, incorporates her artistic skills into her studies, creating detailed illustrations in her notes that enhance her understanding and even won her a school award for note-taking. Jieyu, passionate about seal carving, often creates personalized carvings for her loved ones in her spare time. These creative outlets are nurtured by a supportive family environment, allowing the sisters to maintain a balanced and diverse life.

The twin sisters are shining in their respective research fields, determined to continue their academic endeavors and contribute to their chosen fields. Their story is not just one of academic success but also a testament to the power of exploration, perseverance, and sisterly support.
