On September 14, Zhejiang University welcomed its incoming class of graduate students with an opening ceremony held in the main gymnasium at the Zijingang Campus, alongside satellite venues at the Yuquan Campus, the Polytechnic Institute, the Ocean College, the International Campus, and the School of Software Technology.


University leaders, renowned scholars, and distinguished faculty attended the event, including President MA Yanming, Chairman of the University Council REN Shaobo, and several members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. During the ceremony, representatives of the first cohort of “Five-Star Graduate Supervisory Teams” were honored, and new students were presented with the ZJU emblem.

In his keynote address titled “From Learners to Creators,” President MA encouraged students to go beyond mastering knowledge to shaping new ideas and breakthroughs. He urged them to pursue interdisciplinary exploration, uphold academic integrity, and embrace perseverance in their research journeys. “I hope you will navigate the vast sea of innovation with diligence, integrity, discernment, and dedication,” he said.

Faculty and student representatives also shared their perspectives. Professor WU Dan from the College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Sciences spoke about the importance of learning from the past, committing to the present, and embracing the future with courage. Doctoral student XIANG Ze from the School of Medicine reflected on his own academic journey, highlighting persistence, passion, and a sense of responsibility as the keys to meaningful scholarship.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a new academic journey for thousands of graduate students from across China and around the world, united by their aspiration to contribute to knowledge, innovation, and global progress.
